Play in the driveshaft...Is this normal?

Well i was under my car last night trying to figure out where the noise in my transmission is comeing from. For instance if i push on and off the gas in 3rd gear real fast it sounds like my transmission is very loose and something is banging back and forth inside it. So when i was under the car i shook the driveshaft up and down. I was able to move it up and down a little bit. Is this normal? Also when i put the car in neutral and spun the driveshaft by hand i can hear weird noises rattleing sound comeing from the tranny. I'm thinking that maybe my driveshaft is messed up. What do you think.

Did you check your transmission mount?

Up and down? I mean the DS is splined into the tranny, so if there is play it is probably the U Joints... The loud noise is usually associated with a bad tranny mount though. Check both out.

That's often a sign of worn U-joints.

I have a ES Tranny mount already. I looked at it also seems fine. I don't know what else it can be. But if i press on the gas and let off real fast i can here the noise. It sounds like the transmission is rocking back and forth or something.

Here is a post from one of my friends on a dif site.

The clanking and play in his driveshaft seems to be a bad U joint, put the car in 1st and drive while hitting the throttle, like you are punking someone, It should re create the noise, if so, U joints are pretty cheap.
Hope i helped in any way.
