pinging problem between 1k-2krpm under load

im new to the board and i wanted to say hello!

i also wanted to see if anyone could tell me why my car just started to ping/knock under load only from 1k-2krpm. If i put it in neutral and rev it, its fine. I just got it back from the trans shop for the third time. I just put a bottle of fuel injection cleaner in the tank and im hoping for the best. What do you guys think? The car has got 102k miles on it. thank you.

Is it a pink/knock, or is it more of a hesitation/cut out??

it sounds like sand jumping around, (i know its not sand, lol) but sounds like it or like metal being scraped off, kinda like when a car diesels. it only happens in 3rd and 4th under load between 1k and 2k. there is no power at all between those rpms and when i press the gas harder it gets worse, then shifts to a lower gear and it goes away, so now to keep it from doing that, ive been driving the car in drive instead of overdrive on the freeway. i've got no idea whats going on. i talked to the trans guy, i asked if he touched the computer, he said no. but he said he checked everything on the comp and it looked fine. He was looking for a reason why the gasket seal on the trans blew for the second time and why the new trans pump failed. He said he found nothing and just replaced it. gee 23 looks and only 1 return post, not a good percentage. thank you

Jeez, I don't know what to tell you. It could be a tranny problem, but if you've had it looked at already, maybe get a second opinion. Other than that, I wouldn't know what to say. It's kinda hard to diagnose a sound over the internet though. Sorry I couldn't help.

Plugs and wires are always a potential source...try the pop the hood in the dark with the engine running and look for arcing test.

guess not

nope didnt see any sparks, i read somewhere that you could use salt water in a mist bottle and spray it to see sparks that you wouldnt usually see, is this true and whats the ratio of water to salt?

Did you check the fuel filter to see if it's clogged?

i just changed the fuel filter about 6months ago. Does it get clogged up that fast. i did put 87 octane in the tank about 3 months ago,( didnt have money) but other than that i always put 92 octane. i hope its not the trans cuz i jsut got it back from gettin it rebuilt with a trans go shift kit. i tried putting in some fuel injection cleaner and its kinda going away, i think, weird huh. Thanks for all the replys by the way.

actually it gets worse when it gets warmed up , not much worse, but worse. Then again, the car doesnt really get to 3rd and 4th gear till i get to the freeway, and by the time i get there, the car is warmed up completely. so, im not sure.

the guy who rebuilt the trans said it was valve tap, anothor friend of mine said it was pinging, i dunno. Another friend of mine said that i had to get something lashed,( lifter, rocker lash, something like that) im putting to much money into the car, i hope i dont have to replace anything expensive. where and what are air pump check valves? thanks

ok first we have self adjusting lifters so lash is for solid setups so that is not correct...unless you have a loose rocker arm.....the check valves are the round things on the tubes that come off the manifolds that the air pump connects to there are 2 of them one on each side........they will make sorta pinging noise but not like metal on metal ............that is a hard one to diagnose unless i could hear it....do you have audio capabilities? i would reccomend taking it to a reputable shop and let them check it out.....oinging noises are hard to diagnose on a forum..it could be as little as rocker tapping to rod knocking...who knows there are so many variables
