Don't know about the spring, but I can help you with the pick up orientation. The screen is perpendicular to the shaft. Or parallel to the bottom of the pump. When you put it on, It doesn't look like the pick up does that much.

If I remember correctly, you have to remove a small pin that holds the spring in place. You do this with a small pin punch.

My pickup was angled down. It was ~5¼" from the mounting surface of the pump to the bottom most part of the pickup.

The way I "fit" mine was to take a pice of cardboard and cut it to fit in the bottom of the oil pan. Then put the oil pump in and slightly press the pickup tube into the pump where you can still move it but it will stay in place. Test fit the oil pan with the cardboard in the bottom and the pickup tube should slide ito its proper installed hieght. I was told that you want the screen about 1/4 to 1/2 inch from the bottom of the pan. Mark both the pump housing and pickup tube before removing the pump and then take it and have the tube welded to the housing. Hope this helps.
