Picking the engine and trans out together from the top? Is it possible?

I can easily do it on my 3rd gen, so is it possible to do it on the 4th gen LT1? I have just the shortblock and trans in there and Opti, Pulley and Water pump are removed.

It is possible, you need the happy hooker from http://www.tpis.com According to them you can take the motor AND trans out without even taking the hood off hehe. Just need an engine hoist. Hope that helped.

haha, good luck getting it out the top.

Through the bottom will be ten times easier.

It's probably been about a year, but I do remember someone posting some pictures here of the motor and tranny coming out together from the top of a 4th gen. Z28. Why do you want to pull the motor with the tranny?

Im basically doing it because I have done it that way every time in my 3rd gen and it saves me the hassel of being under the car for a couple hours trying to get the ***in Trans Bolts out. Neck really feels good after that.

For the Happy Hooker at http://www.tpis.com goto the site, click the top image that says "TPIS Catalog" then click the link on the menu on the left that says "tools and equipment" THEN click on "Happy Hooker" its on the left side also. Find it? :-)

how do you take the engine and tranny togethor, out from the bottom?

how would you support everything without having 5 floorjacks taking up all the room?

and then... how would you get the car high enough to roll the engine out from the bottom unless you had a lift?

im really interested... im pulling my engine too...

also... i don't understand how that "happy hooker" works...

is it just a place to hook the engine crane to on the top instead of having to wrap chains around the block?

The way the happy hooker works is, it is already at an angle to pull the motor out in one shot. Seems you cant do motor/trans together though, i was wrong about that. But the happy hooker has a good angle to snag this thing out in one shot. I think. Worth a $40 try i think.

well i gotta take the tranny AND engine out, and i don't have a hoist, so i would have to rent one, which is near impossible for me to do upon investigation...

so im really interested in finding out how to do it from the bottom...

I've seen it done where the wheels are still on the front and all that is needed is a rolling jack to support the tranny in the back. You can then just roll the whole thing out.

Here is one site with some out the bottom pics.

Hey all I just did mine yesterday. I would take them out seperately If I was you. Especially if you dont have a lift like most people. It wasn't that hard to unhook the tranny. Took only about 1/2 hour. Total of I think like 8 bolts. Good luck, email me if you have any questions. It wasn't near as hard as I thought. 1 day job if I didn't have to go get the hoist.
