Picking a coil...

Quick question, does anyone really have any true information on what coil is 'better', or at least any that are definitely not good?

This is what thunderracing.com has to offer...

There options all seem fairly close in price, but of course their descriptions are somewhat varied.

I already have the MSD coil with 6A, and was wondering if the crane or hypertech are superior to the MSD at all?

autozone should have tht one in stock for cheaper than that.
The MSD is really no better than stock, just a nice replacement.

Yeah, get the stock replacement. I had the Crane Fire Ball(?) .....it died after a month or so.....put the stocker back in and its still going 3 yrs later.

I've gone through alot of ignition problems with 99% of them finally solved with new plugs/wires/and opti. Still have a slight rough spot from about 1500-2000, and a slightly rough idle, its gotta be the coil, which is stock 100,000mi.

I'am not retarded, i realize the difference in horsepower gains of the different coils on a stock car is about 1/2 a HP, but which is the best?, how much is the OEM GM coil for the 96/97's? Whats a good RELIABLE choice for an aftermarket one?

I really feel spending the money on an aftermarket coil replacement is all hype. I've had a 10 sec. F-bod with spray and I went through alot of electrical changes and going to the aftermarket on coils never seemed to help any. Of course you will never see the diff. a just a coil will make by it's self. Your only going to see the benifits from a box and wires IMO. after alot of hp and some serious N2O. So IMHO just go with a stock replacement and you'll be good.

I replaced mine after 118,000 miles. AC Delco relacement fixed the high rpm stumble/backfire problem.

It would also seem to me that the amount of voltage you push through the opti is in most cases directly related to how long the cap/rotor lasts. IMO, anything more than what is needed for complete combustion is literally overkill. I realize this AFTER I spent the $100 for a high volt Nology coil!

I look at it this way, i dont know if the coil will fix the problem, but the stock one lasted 100,000 miles, and its a cheap try, so if it works it works, if not im guaranteed at least another 100k, and it'll be dead, sold, or maybe both by then....could'nt say as much for an MSD though

I could not tell the difference between stock and my MSD. I swapped them a couple of times last year just for the heck of it with no measurable differences. I am currently using my 3 year old MSD with no issues.
