Picked up a longblock, busted springs.

I bought an LT1 off a guy that has a CC306 cam and what appear to be 986-16 springs. 3 of them are broken and im pretty worried now. They are still holding the valves up tight, but Im not sure if any major damage happened. I pulled the pan and the lower end if clean, no shavings, fragments or anything left in the pan. Im wondering if springs can be installed wrong? or if it was a preload issue when he set his valve lash. According to the owner it has 1.6 self aligning rockers on it. Just looking for ideas guys. Im not firing it until the springs are replaced, but Im afraid im going to hear a knock when I finally do.

if the motor is out why not just pull the heads real quick and take a look.
