I have a A4, catback flowmaster, and a K&N high flow million mile filter. I have already planned to get some new spark plugs and wires. I also know that these engines/transmissions will live forever if maintained well. I will probably do the tune up to find any lost horses and I'm considering getting a Magna flow headers back exhaust (not really loving the sound of the flow master.)

Correct, '94 up would be an off the shelf performance "module" that had limited capabilities. From '93 down however used "chips" and is the only way to tune the '93. The same off the shelf companies do make limited "chips" for the earlier cars. A mail order or dyno tune produces better results. I have a custom chip burned by pcmforless that's piggybacked to my original chip.
