performance with 140k car?
performance with 140k car?
first it was the starter. OK so I have a 97 z28 with 140k on her. I want to put lt4 hotcam, intake, heads, exhaust, injectors, and all the other lil performance stuff. My question is, is it worth doing it with that many miles on it? The guy I bought it from said the motor has been rebuilt. It runs strong I beat my SRT8 challenger in the 1/4 and 1/8 so the motor to me feels strong. Any advice will be helpful thanks
Re: performance with 140k car?
The LT4 parts aren't worth the effort. You can do much better for less money by porting your stock LT1 heads and getting a matching cam. Consider these sources:

http://www.elliottsportworks.com/
Since the engine is supposed to be rebuilt, do you have any idea how many miles ago, and the quality of parts used in the rebuild?

Re: performance with 140k car?
Unless the guy has receipts showing what was done to the engine I would operate under the assumption it was done wrong. Most LT1 "rebuilds" end up being a step BACKWARDS from stock.
Pull it out and see what you have then you can make decisions on what to do with your budget. Maybe you will be lucky and it will be good but don't assume so.
Going to need a lot of supporting mods as well, headers, fuel pump, CAI, gears, stall if A4, tranny rebuild with Transgo from REPUTABLE vendor if A4, suspension work, etc.
If the shortblock is good then Advanced Induction get my vote for heads and cam. Bolton cars can do 300rwhp pretty regularly, a HOT cam with average ported heads I would expect maybe 360rwhp, AI heads and cam can pretty easily hit 390 and when all complimentary stuff is in place and everything is just right they have gone up into the 430rwhp range on a stock shortblock. Yeah it is more money than the HOT setup but the result is there to warrant the extra cash. Cheapest to do thing ONCE.
The LT1 is quite a capable motor but do a lot of research first, there are a LOT of bad products and bad vendors who get recommended a LOT because people don't know any better.

Re: performance with 140k car?
I agree with what 96mgr says although I prefer to use Lloyd Elliott for heads/valvetrain. He's a supporting vendor and has spent alot of his own time helping people out with questions on the boards over the years. Heck of a guy to do business with. Either one can get you were you need to go, talk to both and go from there.

Re: performance with 140k car?
Maybe a can of "Restore"?
High mileage cars are a roll of the dice, even if the engine was rebuild, the trans, diff, steering still have 140k on them and could zap some of the engine mods due to wear and tear on other driveline components.
Anyway, you asked for opoinions, just my two cents.
