PCV Hose

Do you need that hose that runs from the PCV on top of the PASS. side valve cover to the TB?

That isn't the PCV valve on top of the passenger side valve cover. Its just an empty plastic elbow.

The line that runs from the TB to the valve cover supplies filtered and MAF metered (at least in 94 and ups) air to the PCV system. It is pulled into the passenger side valve cover, through the crankcase and lifter valley, and out from under the intake manifold, through the PCV valve located on the drivers side of the intake, and then dumped back into the intake manifold to be burned.

For a reliable, closed PCV system, you need to leave all the parts in place.

Does it have anything to do with oil, 'cause its leaking oil onto the intake... The hose isnt snug on there, its just there, doesnt take much to pull it off...Im thinking that I need to just put a hose clamp on it and be done with it...

i know i have seen several cars with those breathers in the hole in the pass side valve cover. are there any negative affects of removing it and replacing it with a breather? i would like to get rid of the PCV system since it makes a mess on my valve cover and in the intake manifold.

I ripped this very hose like 2 days ago. It hasn't caused a problem yet, but I'm replacing it before it does.

Air should flow from the TB to the valve cover, so there shouldn't be any oil getting to the TB. IF the PCV valve is plugged up, or if you are getting excessive blowby on the piston rings (you aren't running a blower, are you?), the pressure will build up in the crankcase and force the vapors to vent through the hose and into the TB. The vented vapor will entrain oil droplets. First the little flat area under the TB cover fills up with oil, and then it leaks into the hole in front of the TB blades and gums up the blades and starts to coat the intake plenum.

Check your PCV valve. If its OK, pull the oil fill cap off when the engine is running and feel/listen for any air/vapor chugging out of the oil lfill pipe. That would indicate a ring problem.

I personally would not alter the stock system. It is required to remove harmful vapor from the crankcase, and in a healthy engine it works fine. 800HP and no breather on my engine...

The grommet in the valve cover dries up and needs to be replaced. The hose end on the TB cracks and comes loose. You can get a new grommet, and I use a small hose clamp on the TB end.

Its not really a lot of oil, I was just curious of the oil build up around all the hoses on the right side of the TB... I took off the oil cap and there really isnt a lot of air being pushed out. So I assume its okay. Guess I will just put a clamp on there and see what happens...

i used a clamp on my pass side PCV tube for awhile, then bought a new one from a dealer. Can't remember how much, maybe $20.

and don't do the breather, unless you don't mind smelling burnt oil all time.

i put on one of those breather caps on the oil fill port and smelled burning oil every time i drove the car so i took it off after about 5 days.

bought a flat cap GM oil fill cap and no smell anymore.

That isn't 100% true. At high RPM's there is reverse flow through the "clean air side" of most PCV systems. The small amount of oil that is carried in that flow is considered to be of no concequence. 99% of engines will have some light oil inside the hose and possibly some black/dark residue in the throttle body or the nipple where the hose attaches. Unless it shows a very large amount of oil, there isn't anything to worry about.

No, you would be different if you did not have oil in the hose and TB.
