PCM Adjusting Idle....

Is there a way to disable the PCM from adjusting the idle? I have adjusted teh TB idle and the damn pcm keeps the idle high...approx 1k-1200rpm. Is there a way to bypass this?

Re: PCM Adjusting Idle....

you did not adjust the throttle body idle screw, there isn't one

the screw on the T/B is the throttle stop screw, it should only be used for that purpose

if you idle keeps going high, find out why the pcm keeops raising it, since s stock is lower than that, something like 800RPM on the M6s IIRC

Re: PCM Adjusting Idle....

Re: PCM Adjusting Idle....

intake leak can cause it to raise.

Mine is set at 650, and the IAC has been adjusted for my cam. If I push in the clutch it drops straight to 650, none of that reving crap like it used to do.

Check for leaks, then look into tuning. Put that screw back how you found it.

Re: PCM Adjusting Idle....

Intake is definately not leaking......it is sealed with that copper crap....laid it on thick, checked all, everything is tight, no oil leaking....anything else?

Re: PCM Adjusting Idle....

IAC (idle air controller) could be stuck/dirty. Its that little thing on the bottom of your throttle body held on by funny little screws. Pull it off and clean it out and the little hole in the throttle body real well with carb cleaner or something.

Re: PCM Adjusting Idle....

Your signature indicates someone did "custom tuning" for your cam. Ask the person who did the custom tune what he set your idle at. If you want it lower, ask him if he can set it lower for you. Don't screw around with the throttle stop screw.

Re: PCM Adjusting Idle....

Most our gauges are 100-200rpm high on the reading. I have seen many tuners set the idle at 900-1000 for bigger cams. Could be a possiblity also.

Re: PCM Adjusting Idle....

My idle was set at around 950 with my M-6 and small 210/224 cam. Since the tachs read high I usually see around 1100 or so.

Re: PCM Adjusting Idle....

Actually, I believe that the idle should be high enough to not easily stall after initial start. On an A4, it needs to be not so high as to allow the car to move with your foot off the throttle or too low that it will run roughly or stall easily.

So the bigger the cam, the rougher the idle at low rpms. So obviously if you have a larger than stock cam, you will need a bit more rpm in order to achieve the same smooth idle (that's why a really big cam requires high rpm to stay running.)

So to answer your question, with that cam you may need 900-1000 rpm to run smoothly at idle and if your tach is reading 1100-1200 rpm, I say that you don't have much of a problem.

Your tuner would know about where your particular cam should idle. They may set it high enough to support the drag of the AC too. I have underdrives--don't know if I could idle any slower, and still be smooth, with the idle set less than the 950. JMHO
