passing emmissions with big cam

Is it possible? I have a LE3.2 cam, LE1 heads and a 383. If I have two tunes can I get this passed or is the cam going to have to go?

I have a good tuner that I was talking to about this a few months ago just never got around to it. I am about to buy a full exhaust with cats and muffler to install on my longtubes... am I dreaming?

If I have to change cam etc I might just build a new motor (355 with low compression for a turbo) like I have been dreaming of for years now. Anyone who has done it?

Depends on how stringent your emissions testing is.

Also, try to avoid terms like "3.2." That doesn't give us any indication of how large the cam is.

Ya I know about the "3.2", I just didnt want to give out the cam specs. Lets just say ~.600 lift, LOW LSA, intake and exhaust durations around average for an aftermarket cam.

Are you still on the OBDII for your car or did you switch to OBDI? If you're on OBDII still then you don't have to pass the sniffer test, just have your PCM tuned to have all the sensors come back ready and you're good to go. I on the other hand (having OBDI in my 95') have to do the crap roller and sniffer test and it is not possible to pass those in our counties (Dallas or Houston) as we are emission counties in TX.

Tight LSA and lots of overlap will blow lots of HC so a sniffer is out and even if just a plugin the tech should notice the smell.

For emissions HP I think money is better spent on heads than more cam.

Yeah, that helps us out a lot

Believe me, there's nothing "secret" about the cams being sold other than in the minds of those buying them.

In the meantime go put your mouth on the tailpipe and see if that gives you a good answer.

Re: passing emmissions with big cam

trust me I dont care who knows the specs I am just trying to not **** people off without trying. Was a simple question why all the trolling?

For all the constructive responses thank you. I agree in hindsight the money should have been spent on the heads instead but it wasn't. Trying to figure out the next path for the car. I havent lived in Texas full time in probably 5 years so I guess I am asking too what an emissions test entails these days. I did switch it over to OBDI for ease/expense of tuning. If I put on cats and have an extra tune/PCU (OBDII) just for testing purposes will this really work in Texas?

Thanks MachinistOne!!!!

If it is the plug in test, you don't even need cats. Or an exhaust for that matter. When I was still in MD, dude fired up his on the trailer with open headers. Backed it off, plugged it in and it passed. Drove it back on the trailer and was on his merry way for another two years.

As long as the codes are taken out and all the readiness tests have completed, it'll pass.

The camshaft is literally the most important part of the engine when trying to figure out if it'll pass an emissions test or not. For example it doesn't matter if you have small valves or high compression but the difference between 105 and 107 degrees of lobe separation certainly does. Low LSA, average duration aren't terms that help. what is the average duration of aftermarket cams? Is 114 degrees of lobe separation low or is 109? Big difference come with small numeric changes.
Anyway, if you want meaningful help, post the numbers.......

Re: passing emmissions with big cam

If your car vin indicates it is a 96 then they will do the obd2 test in TX so you will have to swap it back for the test. If it will run on the odb2 tune without throwing codes you are good to go, just you have to be able to drive it around 50 miles in varying conditions without throwing the code first.
For obd1 I used to have 112lsa .600 lift and 232/236 duration cam that passed the treadmill sniffer fine so lift and duration does not matter much if it is tuned appropriately for regular load and non-power enrichment operation. Just watch the long term integrators for them staying within 126-135 range and it will pass fine. Haven't played much with lower lsa cams to know if it effect it much but removing the egr would help because with smaller lobe sep you would get a double erg effect unless I'm thinking of something else but isn't that the reason the LT4 has no egr.
All that said, the place I go doesn't even put my car on the rollers anymore just sniffer in park at various rpms like they used to do but when I had the bigger cam it was tested on the rollers. And I do live in a smog testing county.
