passing California smog

What mods can I perform on my 96 LT1 and still pass smog in California? I have done a little research, and I understand short tube headers, and good tuning might help with passing smog. However, I am just unsure of what mods when it comes to headers, cams, cats etc. Also, if the service engine soon light is on, its an automatic failure. So mods that would throw codes in the obd2 computer are out. This is a daily driver, and I can't afford to have much downtime, or spend alot of money on additional mods, I want to get it right the first time. Thanks.

Headers with a CARB E. O. number are ok. Catbacks are ok. Cams up to CC305 will pass if tuned well. A mild cam like the hotcam will pass with stock tuning.
