Passed CA Smog Again

Well, I passed CA smog again and this year and made a little programming change
to try to drop the HC emmissions and it worked. To give you a reference point
the smog test in 2003 with the stock cam was 34 ppm HC. The 2005 smog test
results shown below are with my current setup, and with all the performance
programming (cooling fans set low).

15 MPH
1952(RPM) 14.6(%CO2) 0.0(%O2) 50,9,49(HC PPM MAX,AVE,MEAS)
0.48,0.02,0.16(CO% MAX,AVE,MEAS) 414,57,32(NO PPM MAX,AVE,MEAS)

25 MPH
2162(RPM) 14.7(%CO2) 0.0(%O2) 34,7,25(HC PPM MAX,AVE,MEAS)
0.45,0.03,0.01(CO% MAX,AVE,MEAS) 701,50,6(NO PPM MAX,AVE,MEAS)

For 2007 I had Jeff Creech tweak the tune for smog so he set the fans back to
the stock settings and the HC dropped to 35 ppm. All the other numbers were
similar to the 2005 results above. The NO numbers for the 25 mph test went
up to 776 ppm, but that is a minor change. It's nice to know that all I have to
do to pass CA smog is pop in the OBDII PCM and drive to the test station.

I'll be installing Ai 185cc CNC heads, ported intake and SLP shortys in the next
few weeks. Hopefully the extra compression from the slightly milled heads and
the Impala head gaskets won't raise my NO to much for 2009.

I love that your car makes good power and passes smog legally. I bet you make 360-380 completely legal through the shorties.

Good luck with the swap, I can't wait to see the results.

Thanks. I'm looking forward to seeing your car again on the dyno. Hopefully
early spring! Although my max goal is 360 rwhp, I appreciate the good thoughts.
We'll see once it's on the dyno. I'm also upgrading to 32# racetronix injectors
since I'll be border line with the stockers.

Great! It sounds like your engine is completely stock (cam & heads).

I'm throwing in a 190cc Ported Heads & Comp Cams 268XFI with 46 degrees of overlap. It isn't much but that should be the limit with CA smog.

I'm going to Haddad to dyno tune for smog.

Will you be camming up with your AI heads?

I have a baby cam, the Crane 104227 with stock heads now. I'm staying with
the cam and just swapping the heads and intake. My mods list has all the details.

Nothing wrong with small cams, right? I will be looking forward to your results with the new heads.

The place that I was born and raised, my home town, the place where I can go fishing on the ocean in the morning , skiing in the afternoon , and then watch the sunset in the desert that night. No way!!

Yep. Climate, family roots and economy keep me here.

Glad it all worked out for you on the smog, Mike. Keep me posted on your progress this week on the head/intake swap.

Those are some great numbers (emission numbers that is). Thank god they aren't as strict about emissions here in Houston. Congratulations on passing.

I went to Crane Cams to see the Overlap. Do you know the LSA?

If it is 112, your overlap is 55.
If it is 114, your overlap is 51.

LSA is 112. If a Hot Cam passes smog then the Crane 104227 should pass too.

I was very pleasantly surprised to see the HC drop to near stock levels with the
fans set to the stock on/off specs.

Will do Mike. This will be a lot simpler job than the cam swap so I'm looking forward
to tearing things apart. I've wanted to get the Comp Rs out of there for a long time
and put the GM lifters back in. I never did like running lifters with a miniscule preload.
It will be nice to get back to the factory 1/2 to 3/4 turn. And hopefully putting in the
SLP shorty's won't be too much of a PITA.
