pass emmisions on 97 T/A with no EGR/AIR? NO SES LIGHT
pass emmisions on 97 T/A with no EGR/AIR? NO SES LIGHT
well idk why but ive been driving around for a week or so after i did my header install, and my SES light has not come on yet. The egr is completely disconnected and blocked off and air pump is unplugged and system is completely out of the car. I would think the light should come on by now, so for the hell of it i took it to Autozone. the general scan tool they use said there are no codes and it read "PASS". guys think its alright? lol idk why but its not showing anythings wrong at all. im really suprised by all this and find it humorous, at least for now, just hope nothing bad happens. i think im gonna save my money from the tune to get something else. any ideas about this situation.haha?

Thats odd for an obd2 system. But you have to figure the system is not looking for feedback like a networked system would. As long as everything stays in a certain parameter it will not pull a code. Also some codes wont throw a mil until it fails a certain number of key cycles. I know with my obd1 if there is any code it will automatically turn the air pump on until it goes into closed loop.

I would still recommend the tune for the extra HP you will get. Your car will wake up a bit more by doing this. People dont just get tunes to rid codes or prevent them. It will also help any a/f ratio problems you may have and not know about.
Re: pass emmisions on 97 T/A with no EGR/AIR? NO SES LIGHT
the guy who might tune it said he would just fix the codes. we never talked about anything else, but idk we'll see. i dont have emmisions for a while anyways. i think im gonna drive around another week or so then take it to the emmisions place and have them test it. it costs 20 bucks for a check if your not due, so ill see what happens.
Re: pass emmisions on 97 T/A with no EGR/AIR? NO SES LIGHT
The AIR is only really used during cold start ups to help heat the converters up faster so they function properly. So removing the AIR won't really affect emission's readings. But it's illegal to tamper with any emission's equipment so technically they could fail you with a visual inspection. Removing the EGR could affect your emission's readings and cause you to fail. Most inspectors won't recognize that the EGR is missing since it's hard to see. No cats would also be a visual failure and would cause you to fail the tailpipe test. But if you have OBDII they just connect to the computer to make sure the rear O2's say everything looks good with the cats so you could pass with sims or programming. But no cats would also fail the visual inspection.

Your pretty lucky, even with my EGR system hooked up, it was still causing me problems where madz28 had to do an emissions compliant tune to make it work properly.

Just out of curiosity, for the guys who live in states that check this, what kind've fines would you be looking at if you just said screw it and decided to pay instead of going through the hassle of getting emissions compliant? Or is it not simply a matter of paying a fine to keep driving?
