Pantyhose mod

While tuning my PCM, I noticed my 4" CAI had gotten disconnected, and bent up.

Well, long-story short, I removed it, so all there is now is a 3"-4" connector on the MAF sensor. I covered the 4" opening with some pantyhose for a quick air filter.

This, perhaps combined with the tuning, has given me a new car! It pulls so much better, throttle response is better... just feels so different.

And, I verified this by scanning it: I am now getting a max of 308gps through my MAF sensor on my stock engine! My previous best was about 276. Is this insane or what?

What do you guys think about using pantyhose for a filter? It definitely is trapping some stuff, which I can see, but not sure if it's good enough to keep using.

If it isn't, can you think of something else to use instead?

Interesting twist on engine bay dress-up.

It can't be filtering very well, it wasn't designed for anything close to that.

The only reason I did it was because I've heard of others doing it at the track, usually right on the throttle body, for extra HP. No pics yet, sorry.

I wish someone made an elastic filter that could serve the same purpose, but filtered well.

At the track is ok... but, man... a little bit of debri won't be stopped by Leggs and could cost you a MAF sensor :-)

How about some aluminum bug screen secured with a large worm clamp?

Hmmmm...try one of those "tube" air filters on the end of the MAF, where the coupler is now. I just finished hacking one up in a failed experiment. Lemme go get the part number....

Fram filter #CA8038. It will slip onto the end of the MAF, but I am not sure how well it will squeeze in next to the radiator shroud. For $20 it might be worth a shot. Food for thought anyway

Thanks for the thoughts, both of you. And EbeZ28, what failed in your experiment?

Another added "benefit" is how well you can hear the engine now. It's louder than the stock exhaust now. Sounds like a... vacuum cleaner!!

Ahh the experiment

Well I built a bellows out of a 4"-3" sewer coupler with the IAT and Opti holes installed. When I put the MAF on it looked so pretty, I decided to see if I could rig a filter to go on the end of my MAF so I could say goodby to my intake elbow forever. Long story short, I hacked up the above mentioned filter to try an ghetto rig some kind of "over the radiator" setup in an LT1. Didn't go real well

The pantyhose results has me thinking I need something like a large breather/small enghine filter to slap on the MAF (between the end of the MAF and the radiator). Maybe I don't need a big filter at all.

That's what I am thinking too. So far, so good.

Please let me know if you find a filter or setup that works with this method!

Funny thing, I lost my filter to my go-ped so one of my temporarily while the replacement filter was on order. My first thought was to use pantyhose, but unfortunately, I don't wear them so didn't have any laying around the house. I ended up using one of my dress socks.

Have you tried getting readings with the filter (I assume your using a 4" cone of some sort) attached directly to the MAF? I am wiring mine (a 4" that came with the FIPK) as an interim solution.

I would be curious to see the GPS results.

On another note, I think the K&N universal filters have some potential. If I can trim my coupling short enough to get 1-2.5" of clearance, I think I am in business. I'll be shaving some more tonight

No, the filter won't fit between the shroud and ABS stuff. That's one reason it kept coming loose--it's so BIG! It would push loose the plastic guard underneath the car since it stood so tall. And that would cause it to come undone from the 4" ducting.

I am definitely open to using a filter right off the MAFS, or off the connector I have on it.

A sock is an interesting idea... Depending on what kind, it would probably filter a lot better than the pantyhose... but may be too restrictive.

Oh, what fun.

I put a old sock on mine just now and took it for a test drive and man what a diffrence it makes in the throttle response...

I took and old sock and turned it inside out ( dont want any of the loose cotton to get in there) and put it at the end of the air bellow and used 1 of my adjustable clamps and tightend it down so the sock wouldnt get sucked in....

The sock doesnt look restrictive enough like an air filter does...
