hey there,

i've paint my rims before and you should TAKE THE TIRE OFF FIRST!!

most tire shops like discount tire do it for free.

you must take the rim, and sand it down so you can have surface for the paint to stick to, wash and clean the rim after to get rid of dust. then a couple coats of paint 7 is too much IMO. 3 or 4 is good and 4 coats of clear will be more than enough.

just remembe to go slow, and dont make the paint uneven!!!

Remove the tires, then take the rims to a shop that does sandblasting and have them beadblasted. Otherwise the paint wont stick.
2 coats black epoxy primer (this also helps adhesion!)
2 coats black paint
2-3 coats clearcoat

My wheels are being painted black as we speak by a reputable paint shop. It is only $50 to get each wheels tires removed, wheel sanded, primered, painted and clearcoted, tire put back on and balanced. Once I found out how cheap it was, I just decided it wasnt worth the hassle to try to paint it myself. The paint alone and materials will cost at least half that. Its being painted to match the color of my car...stock gm black, whatever you want to call it. Guess there will be a bunch of us out this summer with black wheels. Also, the painter told me that its fairly difficult to get paint to stick to the powdercoated silver wheels, but is apparently fixed with a special primer. Good luck with the wheels. Ill post some pics of mine when thier done.

Price atomotive grade sandpaper and sandblasting then make your decision. If you dont want to sand blast use 320 grit sandpaper, dry, red scuffpad with ppg final scuff and water. Do not use steel wool.
