Obviously, many setups do not need them. It's hard to offer any hard and fast rule, but if you need top notch springs, it is only logical to consider Ti retainers. Light valves can be quite expensive (hollow stem or Ti). Light springs are great - a spring also has to control its' own mass. Using stiffer springs has a self defeating element because they are usually heavier. This is one of the primary advantages of the bee-hive design. note that they are installed with the small diameter at the top, where the most motion is. Also, the small diameter only needs a small retainer. Ti springs (used on the LS7) are another option, but VERY costly.

Depending on how much money you want to spend, there are some excellent steel retainers for 1.550 dia. dual springs in the under 19 gm range, vs just under 16 gm for an equivalent Ti retainer, which wears out faster as the spring dances around. The steel used is "unobtanium", and if you have to ask the price, you probably don't have a large enough sponsor. You could back the material off just a bit to a VAR alloy and use it on a beehive. At that size they almost float in air.

Just a note on Titanium. The price of the raw material (Ti bars) has really gone up in the last year or so. A major source of Ti is China, and some Chinese made Ti parts are sold here for less than our cost of the raw material. As far as the quality of the Ti and the machining of these parts, Caveat emptor!
