P0400 EGR code!!!

I recently installed Long Tubes and now my SES light is coming on...I have the dreaded EGR malfunction. I know this is a common problem after a header install, but what are my options? I do not want to live with the SES light on all the time. Please help!

Join the club brother. My third thread is just below at the moment. Once I threw that code all kinds of things have happened...and none good. I hope you have better luck.

You have your sims installed and any non specific tuning like hypertech removed right?

Yes, the sims are installed and the only thing Im using the hypertech for is to turn my fans on earlier for the 160 stat. What other kinds of problems?

Do a search on me and you will hear my tale. I would turn off that hypertech and run hot because I am not sure that it didn't cause some problems and they say on their website that it is not intended for much beyond stock. My email is doodad@mindspring.com feel free to keep in touch, we'll figure all this out.

BTW, when you dynotune they can turn the EGR off for you and you can block it an remove it as well.

Are you running the cats or the off-road pipes? I only get the EGR code when I'm running the off-road pipes, I guess the cats provide just enough backpressure to prevent the problem. Otherwise the only fix I know of is to have the code programmed out.

You must be one of the lucky ones, Evilbox. I havent even tried the off-road pipes. Ive had the cats in there since the install and still I have this problem. The one thing I havent tried yet is closing off my Borla, which I would rather not do. Could the type of cat-back really make that much of a difference? Also, what (if any) are the negative effects of programming EGR out of the computer?

There are ALOT of guys with 96-97 cars and long tubes on this board. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Well there is something called an EGR simulator a fellow board member created in the past, but I haven't gotten around to trying it. Now that I have emissions testing I have to leave my EGR connected. E-mail me if you want the instructions, I can send it to you.

Just FYI, the EGR code doesn't really hurt anything. I drove my car for months with it on and even took it to the track. It is annoying though...

The EGR valve for 96-97 was defective. The old valves used to leak after the sealing materials degraded. GM has a new revised valve. I used to get this code untill I installed the new valve.
