Oxygen Sensor Replacement

My first post here, so I will toss out a "hey whats up" to everyone.

I have a '96 Z which last night after a 2 minute drive decided to throw a CEL, so swung past my local auto shop and they checked the code it was throwing, which ended up being an "Upstream Oxygen Sensor"... I assume this is the one some where on the passanger side?

I dont know nothing about fixing cars and typically always had a bro in law who was a mechanic doing all the work... but now Im divorced and living out in bumb**** nowhere Ohio and need to get this fixed on my own.

Was hoping someone could supply me with some pics of where this is located exactly and what tools I will need to replace it. Appreciate any help.

Re: Oxygen Sensor Replacement

Need to know the exact trouble code for the position/location of the sensor. "Upstream" would probably indicate it was before the cat, but you have two of those (and two behind the cats). There is not enough information to determine which side.

Re: Oxygen Sensor Replacement

A code reader should tell you what bank it is and from that you can determine if it's the drivers side or passengers side.

You'll need a o2 socket, a ratchet and some pb blaster to replace your o2 sensor(s).

Re: Oxygen Sensor Replacement

Bank 2 I was told and was given a part #15703 for a Bosh O2 sensor which says upstream. And I cant use box wrenches? And where exactly is this located and is it easy to access? Sorry for so many questions. I didn't get the trouble code... does the computer he hooked up to find the code, happen to have a memory so I could call up and have them look?

Re: Oxygen Sensor Replacement

Many people have had bad results with the Bosch O2 sensors. A GM/Delphi sensor is recommended.

Bank 2 is the passenger side. If you have a stock exhaust, it's in the Y-pipe between the exhaust manifold flange and the inlet to the cat.

Again... what was the EXACT numerical code? There are O2 sensor codes that can be caused by problems other than the O2 sensor itself.

Re: Oxygen Sensor Replacement

I didnt get the code from the guy at Advanced Auto... does the tool he used have a memory for me to call back and ask? Im in the middle of nowhere here, so if it does have a memory its not like many people are stopping by to ask for a code to be read.

N/M ... I called up and believe it or not someone else came in after me and had a code read, so it removed mine. I will just hang back and wait for the CEL to come on again lol.

Re: Oxygen Sensor Replacement

Sometimes when sure the sensor is shot I'll just cut the wires and put a regular deep socket on it to be sure it comes out without rounding it off. Or a box end wrench if you can get to it.

You could do that but once you cut the wires you're kinda stuck not moving it. Have to tow it to a shop if you can't get it off on your own.

In the bottom middle of the picture, that's the starter. It's on your exhaust just after the manifolds so just follow your exhaust up. I guarantee you'll find it.
