Oxygen sensor headache
Oxygen sensor headache
Ever since I installed new SLP headers I've had problems with the oxygen sensors. At first, I would get P0153 (the passenger side sensor). I swapped sensors to see if the code followed the sensor and it did. So I replaced the bad sensor and then about 150 miles later the same code would pop up. I again swapped sensors and the code followed the sensor again. I repeated the swap and replace routine about three times now. Recently, I got a P0133 and P0155 code so I've run out of ideas of what is going on. I first thought there wasn't an exhaust leak since the code followed the sensor. But now I don't know. Any suggestions?
Re: Oxygen sensor headache
Are the headers coated??? If so, it is sometimes necessary to drive the vehicle for a length of time to "burn off" some of the coating that came on the headers as this coating will contaminate the O2 sensors. Obviously you would have your old O2 sensors installed while this is happening, then switch to a new set.

Re: Oxygen sensor headache
I also have the same problem with the SS. I would also seem to think that it might be the coating in the headers but I bought mine used. Another possibility I thought it could be was the copper RTV that I used to seal up the y-pipe and the header gaskets. I don't think this would be the case either since it is sensor safe RTV. Another possibility is leaking coolant that would contaminate the sensors, however I have not had any problems with coolant levels lowering.
The only thing that I could figure that would cause it is my car running pretty rich. Maybe the excess fuel is killing the sensors? I just replaced my sensors three days ago but I'll give it 3 weeks until they die again. They are also Delco sensors...

Re: Oxygen sensor headache
The headers aren't ceramic coated and the oxygen sensors I'm using are AC Delco. I used the copper sealant for the headers that is sensor safe. But I'm starting to wonder if the sealant might be the problem. Also, in searching the net, I've seen that a slightly dirty MAF, not enough to trigger a MAF code, could cause the oxygen sensors to act up.
