Post Help: Engine runs for 2 seconds and dies

A week ago, I was driving my 97 SS on the high way and I floored it a bit and all of a sudden the engine started to cutoff similar to the situation when you don't have enough fuel. I parked on the side tried to start the engine again but unfortunately I could not run it again.

The engine runs for max 2 seconds and dies. I found out that the only way to keep the engine running is to rev it by keep pumping the gas paddle and as soon as I take off my foot of the paddle the engine dies again. it works only when I pump the paddle.

I am not a mechanic and unfortunately we don't have a real competitive ones in here so I did some primitive investigation and I hope it helps.

- I can hear the click Zzzz sound of the fuel pump so may be this means it is working? I changed the fuel filter.
- I checked all fuses inside the car and under the hood and all were fine.
- I used my Hypertech scanner to search for error codes but non existed.
- I have a powerdyne supercharger. I searched for any air leak but no tears or rips.
- I can tell that the blower is working as the PSI Gage shows a normal reading when reving the engine (when pumping the gas paddle as I said)
- The car is parking in my garage all the time and has only 60,000 Miles on it.

I have the following mods (97 SS A4) :
- Borla Exhaust, y pipes and headers.
- Powerdyne 4.5 psi Supercharger
- Rear gears and transGo shift Kit
- Hypertech power programmer
- MSD ignition
- Torque converter
- Hypertech PowerStat

What are the things that I should look into as I don't really want to take it to GM unless I know what exactly is wrong.

Again I am not a mechanic but I have some common sense and some primitive tools The only advanced tool I have is the Hypertech scanner.

Would appreciate your help please.

check fuel pressure

there is a shrader valve(test port) on the back of the fuel rail, i think you can borrow gauges from autozone or similar

OK if you have the Powerdyne supercharger then you have a FMU (fuel management unit) it has vacuum hoses going to it, and its probally under the car forward of the fuel filter, see if one of the vacuum hoses is not hooked up or burned on the exhaust. You still in Kuwait? I was all over Kuwait twice, stationed at Al Jabber, I know the roads are rough there! I would drive a jeep from the Jabber to DOHA and Kuwait City.

Another vote for checking your fuel pressure. With the vacuum line removed from the fuel pressure regulator, you should see 41 - 47 psi at idle. If the car won't idle, you should still see around 35 - 40 psi after the pump primes (engine not running).

I have ordered a fuel pressure gauge and till the time it gets here, may I ask where is that (test port) exactly?

what is the easiest way to check the pressure? is there a way to do that from the engine side? i dont have tools to lift the car.

Thanks a lot

The FMU is located at the left valves cover and all hoses seams ok and in place.

Is there a way to test the fuel pressure from the hoses that go into the FMU? if yes how?

Are you going back to kuwait?
