Question Overheating a lot

I've been thinking about putting a 160 t-stat in. I've got a 94 with a new water pump and it gets over 210 a lot. If I keep the heat blowing in the car it will stay around 210, either just below or just above. If I turn the heat off and come to stop at a light it will get around 240 degrees. What do you all think? A 160 stat?

Thanks,
Shawn

160 T-stat, and have madwolf tune your PCM to make the fans come on early.

It will never get hot again unless you have something else wrong.

Re: Overheating a lot

I think you need to get it fixed ASAP before you pop a headgasket.

How hot does the car run on the interstate at speed? If it runs normally at speed with air going through the radiator you need to check and make sure both fans are coming on. By the time you hit just above 220* both fans should be on if you have stock programming. Check your coolant level and make sure it's topped off. Get it flushed and refilled if you haven't done so in the last 2 or 3 years. Make sure there isn't a bunch of leaves and debris restricting airflow in front of the A/C condensor or between it and the radiator. It is possible that your thermostat is going bad, but you should be fine on just replacing it with a stock thermostat, I would also get the fans programmed to come on sooner. The car will actually hit 225* with the stock fan programming, which is way too hot for my comfort.

Give some more detail about the problem- when it happens, how long it takes to reach that point, any recent changes, when was the last time you have maintenance done, coolant level, etc. The more detail you give the better chance of a diagnosis you get.

Who is madwolf? Do I have to have the computer tuned?

What about bleeding the air? Does the car need to be running when you are bleeding the air from the cooling system?

Thanks,
Shawn

I don't do a lot of highway driving but even when I do it doesn't get over 220. I do a lot of stop light driving. The only times it gets over is at a stop with the heat off. I live in houston and I'm used to heat so I just leave the heat on all the time. If I happen to get hot I can turn on the ac and it will stay at 210 and under. It's just if I turn the heat off. I know somethings not right. I haven't bled the cooling system. I would've thought they'd done that when they did the water pump.

I just had the same issue. After checking the fans, waterpump, flushing the radiator, and replacing the thermostat, it turned out to be my radiator cap not being able to hold any pressure. 5$ fix. If you are looking for a 160 t-stat i'll sell you my old one with 20k miles on it for 12$ shipped.

What brand is it? Do you know if I have to get my computer tuned or will it be ok with out?

Its hypertech powerstat. You don't need a tune but a tune will lower temps even more. Or a manual fan switch. PM me if you got more questions.

Ya run the car and then loosen the bleeder screw next to the thermostat. Once you see coolant seep out just tighten it again.

Re: Overheating a lot

Ok, I bled the system and replaced the radiator cap. It's still heating up a lot so I'm going to get a hypertech 160 stat today. Is there any one in the Houston/Katy area that knows where I can get the computer retuned for the 160 stat or anybody who's willing to help me out?? I appreciate the help. I just want to keep my baby running but it's getting hotter out there day by day. I don't think it'd be able to hold up to the real summer Houston heat.

Thanks,
Shawn

so your blown head gasket is what was causing the overheat? i wonder if mine is doing the same.

If yours isnt fixed with that radiator cap check and see if a rksport air dam would help as i see you have gfx's and that can cause a overheating problem. I have a problem still with my car running hotter then id like. Its weird and i have everything new in the cooling system besides the fans but it still gets to 210ish sometimes on both the highway and city...its odd cause other times it runs so cool.

If I didn't turn the heater on and if it was hot outside, I would overheat close to the red and i'd have to pull over. I found out my radiator cap wasn't holding pressure and after replacing it my car now runs very cool most of the time (a tad above 180) but like you, some times on the street or freeway it will hit 210 under normal driving conditions. Its really random.

I think it might be my torque converter generator a lot of heat. I never had heat issues until after I installed the converter.

Re: Overheating a lot

I bled the air out of my fluid the other day too. Instead of just running the car and letting some fluid come out of the bleeder screw and closing it off, do this like 3-4 times or however many you want until your comfortable w/it. I used the bleeder screw that goes into my throttle body and cycled all the air out 3 times, not just 1. It would start spitting until only fluid came out then I''d close it, reopen it and more air would come out. I did this until I was comfortable that all of the air bubbles or whatever were out not just the ones happening to blow by the 1st time I opened it. Just a thought. Are you running a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze too? Just another thought lol.

I just put a 160 Hyperstat in too and it works so great. I havn't even got my fans reprogrammed yet, but it's running so much cooler now. It stays around 180 and if I turn the AC on it will hardly even go above that with the radiator fan blowing.

If your interested in getting your pcm reprogrammed, it's never too late to pick up a cheap laptop, aldl cable, the free software and start learning how to use it, since you got the 94. That's basically all you need to pull your .bin file so other's can modify different settings for your needs.
