Overheating and leak?

Within ten minutes of driving my car is overheating and seems to be leaking out of the cap and it's a new cap. All other hoses are fine. Suggestions on what the problem may be? Do I need a new radiator? Please help

Re: Overheating and leak?

Not really an 'Advanced Tech' topic. Let's move this to LT1 Based Engine Tech.

Re: Overheating and leak?

Define "overheating".... what temp is the dash gauge indicating?

Have you verified that the fans are running - 1st fan (or low speed) at 226*F, 2nd fan (or high speed - depends on whether you have an "early" or "late" 94) at 235*F?

Is the SES light on?

Is the low coolant light on?

I didn't mean to place it in the advanced tech section. Sorry. It reads at 226 and then I turn the car off. No indicator lights come on at all. I'm at a loss. And yes my fans work.

Re: Overheating and leak?

Why do you consider 226*F "overheating"? 226* would be a bit more than 1/2-way between the 210* mark and the 3/4 hash mark. What would happen if you didn't shut it down? Does the fan come on and cool it down?

Re: Overheating and leak?

Assuming you have programming to support your cam listed in your sig, did the programmer change fan operation at all? Are you running a 160-degree thermostat? All things aside, STOCK fans don't even come on until 227 degrees (low speed) and 235 degrees (for the high speed).

for the leaking , is the overflow connected? is it leaking from the neck? can you find the leak?

Re: Overheating and leak?

The temperature keeps climbing and by the time I turn it off half my coolant is gone and what's left inside is boiling. I let it sit once to see if my fans would come on and they did but it didn't help. My temp gauge kept going.

Yes I have a 160 thermostat. I was actually on my way to get a dyne tune when all this started happening so I don't have a tune for it yet.

The leak, yes everything is connected. It's not the neck. It really looks like its all around the cap. All the hoses are ok, new cap, i don't know what's wrong. Should I try and pressurize it and see what happens?

If I do pressurize it, find no leak and I still have this problem should I just get a new radiator?

Re: Overheating and leak?

So I pressurized it and the is a very small crack in the sidewall of the radiator. I'm getting a new one.

Thank you for your help
