I would just make sure the radiator has good airflow, no air in the system, correct thermo, and that the WP is working.

Running hot only when idling sounds like a fan problem to me. Those are the only things that keep the car cool at idle. And everything else is working good obviously if it doesnt overheat any other time.
stock temp is 180? since when? my 94 usually went to 210.

you have to reprogram because of the FANS....the fans come on at a certain temp, so when you get a 180 or 160 t-stat, it would be pointless if you dont change the fan temp too.

Not sure if you guys are on the same page, but the stock thermostat is supposed to be 180º.

hmm, do u know around what temp the camaros stay around?

when i first bought my car (state trooper auction) the temp would idle well beyond 180...hmm, i wonder if they put different temp t-stats on police camaros.

i guess my car's an odd ball...much like its owner.

Don't be confused. The thermostat temp is not what the engine running temp is. It is only the temp that the thermostat opens. Running temp is influenced by ambient temperature, cooling system efficiency, engine load, etc. Typically when cruising on a moderate temperature day, your engine temp will be anywhere from 10º-20º higher than the thermostat temp. Mine is more like 12º-15º. In cold weather it will run closer to the the thermostat temp.

Autozone did give me the wrong thermostat.........I bought the right one from Napa.......last time I go to Autozone for anything..

I did bleed the system and check for debris between the radiator and the condensor and it was clear.

I also replaced all three fuse relays for the fans. After all this it still gets real close to the redline when parked and driving. I replaced the coolant sensor and the other temp gauge is working.........I'm not sure what else to look for........

Does it need to be reprogrammed even though it already had a 180 degree thermostat? How can I check to make sure both fans are kicking on?

I fought the same problem as you over the last few months. I finally fixed the problem last week. The radiator was almost completely clogged internally. The car now runs at 185-190 (with a factory 180 deg) instead of 220-230.
Good Luck

To keep your cooling system from clogging up, you want to use distilled water not tap water. The minerals in tap water, over time, will corrode your cooling system.
