overheating except when ac is on

right now, im running a 80 to 20 water to coolant mixture. its been around 60 degrees when ive been driving it. after 15 minutes or so of normal driving the temperature will go pretty close to the red area. when i leave the ac on or the defroster on, it stays at 160 all the time. the thermostat has been replaced with a 180. what could it be?

Did you bleed it?

The AC turns on the fans so thats why the AC makes a difference.

Without the AC on the computer doesn't turn on the fans till its really darn warm.

are you sure its a 180 and installed correctly? even with the fans on the temp shouldn't really be below the thermostat temp. I forget which sensor sends to the pcm and where the gauge reads from.

Maybe a fan relay is :blah: and isn't kicking on the fans.

The sensor on the head sends to the gauge and the sensor on the WP sends to the PCM...

That is why the head is always cooler than the WP (reverse cooling)

I am having sort of the same problem and suddenly is overheating without the A/C.

I have the same problem...The fans wont come on but i dont have to use the A/C. All i do is turn on the air and it turns the fans on. I also tried replacing the coolent temp sensor for the PCM but didn't help at all. This one has me stumped aswell.

..Unless you do a single switch conversion like I did. GM offers a switch that goes in the water pump that sends the signal to both the guage and the PCM, so they're registering the same. Now my guage knows true water temp.

What for??? it is an awesome idea to know the temp of the head rather than the temp of the block... the temp of the head will determine if it will probably knock or not... its normal that the temp from the block to be 10-15F higher than the heads... another thing.. if the car overheats its the head gasket that will go, and its very probable that you get a hotspot in the head due to air than in the block, so its more important to know the teamp of the head as in a critical moment due to air it can be a lot higher than the block...
