out of box AFR 190 dyno #'s
out of box AFR 190 dyno #'s
I'm trying to decide what heads i want to buy, or get stock castings ported. I know the AFR's have more potential once they have further port work, but i can't afford that right now. I'm not really trying to bs around with alot of the stock casting porting guys either, i've heard of alot of customer service and consistency issues. Sooooo, what have some people put to the tires with out of the box 190's, either the regular heads or the competition ported heads, and with what cam(on stock bottom end). Its time for me to make a decision! Thanks!

IMHO I would port your stock heads. Stock cubic inches don't need much more than that. Then when you build a stroker you can always get some bigger AFRs.
If it were me I would get my heads flowed (after porting) and send the sheet to Joe Overton at Lethal EFI Performance and have him pick you a cam and a good tune. The numbers he has been throwing around on this board are incredible.

The thing is that i'd spend at least $1500 on a maxed out port job for the stock castings, then spend another $1800 on some AFR's and another $800(not sure on this price) to get them ported when its time to build a serious motor. If i can make at least 370rwhp with unported AFR's, i'd buy them and when the motor blows after i'm out of college, gettem ported and make some real #'s(saving $1500). There has to be some folks on here with stock AFR's. All my searches brought up #'s from people that gottem ported. Do you guys think 370+ is makable through an auto with a well matched cam and long tubes?

My buddy had AFR 195 competition ported LT4 heads and intake with a cc306 and a 6 speed. We estimated him to be about 350 or so to the wheels by the way that I left him. He had his heads reported and Joe ground him a cam, 452 at the wheels. He would have just ported the stockers if he had to do it over again. I did, and I am very happy.
Its a vigilante 3200 stall in front of a built 4L60, stock throttle body. I hope someone has gotten respectable #'s out of some stock 190's, if not those are some expensive boat anchors with the numbers people are getting out of stock castings with smaller valves! anyone else?
