OTVC wire install
OTVC wire install
Any tips in doing this? I have had the kit since i rebuilt my engine and i didnt install them at the time in case the motor didnt run or something.
What should i remove for easy access? How do you use the tool for cutting and crimping the wires? This kit was purchased from thunder racing with top mount looms.

Re: OTVC wire install
Tip #1 - send them back and get conventional routing wires (8mm). They're SO much more reliable. The DIY wires are a general PITA. Boots fit like **** over the wires, crimping tool sucks, and you have to assemble them and, if you're not careful, you can create multiple failure points. I'll never use them again.
Standard routed wires are much cleaner, don't clutter up the engine bay, and allow you to CLEAN your valve covers.

Re: OTVC wire install
From what ive been hearing thunder racing has closed. I put together wires on My 84 trans am before and they werent bad to do. I thought routing the new wires in the stock location was a shtty job. And with my headers i wanted to do these. I even bought purple wires and looms to match the engine.

Re: OTVC wire install
Ive had my OTVC wires for 10 years, on 2 cars, and a total of 60k miles. To say they are a bad choice is bad advice.
As far as the instal goes, Measure twice cut once. Get a buddy to help you will need it. Be patient and check everything.
A case of beer may be needed
Happy wrenching.

Re: OTVC wire install
to each their own... but im with ram air on this one. both my friends have otvc wires. i bought some but after looking at theirs i chose to steer clear. it looks so much cleaner routing them underneath. also their valve covers get so dirty and harder to clean.
ive got no burning issues or anything routing them under and it was easy.
take your time and dont just throw them in the with them not touching and go. take the time to make sure they cant move under turning etc enough to hit the headers.

Re: OTVC wire install
I've looked at those and don't see any advantage at all to using them. I'm not even sure why anyone thinks that is a good idea. Distributor is down below, plugs are down below, Why run the wires up over the valve covers then down to the plugs again? Just use good quality wires, conventional routing and tie them up good to keep them out of the way of the headers, use fiberglass boot covers and it'll last a long time. If you choose to terminate your wires using a cut-to-fit universal kit, get the good crimper with interchangeable dies, not the cheap POS one that looks like a pliers & wire stripper.
Re: OTVC wire install
Not sure if im doing these right. Just put the coil wire together and the car started so im assuming its ok. I did do a set before on my old 305and they all worked. I got the msd tool to cut and crimp the wires but the tool thunder racing sent me works very well. So as long as the conductor core is folded and touching the terminal and crimped it should be ok?
Im sure im just worrying. And they will be fine.

When it comes to LT1s and 4th gen F-Bodys, Fred and Rob know more than God and Detroit put together.
Re: OTVC wire install
my set-up: already had the msd 8.5's on the car. got a second set of wires this was for the imp if I remember right. Used the wire that was the size I needed. also separated them with madeforyou wire seperaters. came out really clean.
