Orientation of oil pick up tube

I'm at work and I have acces to a machine shop, and I was wanting them to put a tac weld on my pick up tube so I don't have to worry about it. I was wondering what the orientation of the tube was. I assume the screen is perpendicular to the shaft. Can anyone confirm this. Thanks.

correct
perpendicular to the shaft, parallel to the bottom of the pump.

Mine was angled down farther than perpendicular. ~5¼" from the mounting surface of the pump to the lowest part of the pick-up.

I went ti have a shop weld mine last week and they said " welding is no way to do it, we will pin it for ya"

I dont see a benefit to "pinning" what are your thoughts?

This is what I did for the oil pump on the 355 I built..

I didn't weld the pick up tube directly.. what I did was got some sheet metal, cut it into a trianglular shape. At at two corners of it, drilled holes so they match with the bolt threads in the body of the pump (sorry.. I don't know the technical names..) You bolt down the sheet metal inbetween the bolt head and the body so that it secure, then bend the piece a bit and weld the third corner to the pickup.

I know that sounds like a lot of work.. but if you ever need to get your pick up tube off later.. it's not welded. And at the same time it's completely secured.

I find welding the tubes makes them brittle and they can break, so I tie the pickup on with wire. No way for it to come off and its still removable if needed
