Re: optispark question

Is your opti working fine? If so if you just want to do a tune up you can just do the cap and rotor. But if I were you, I would save up the extra 100$ or so and get the whole opti, just insurance.

Re: optispark question

Well heres whats happeing....lately iv been noticing a slight rough idle and im starting to here the ignition system in the radio. i just had plugs and wires replaced as well. To top it off i went to the emisions test today and failed..they said there was to much unburnt gas. the car has 90k miles on it and the opti is orignal so im thinking it might be the problem??

Re: optispark question

I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that its the Opti. Its just one of several components that could cause the problems you are having. You need to do a bit more diagnostic work.... perhaps a code scan, and a full data log under variable operating conditions. Misfires can cause the emissions problems with unburned HC. Are you sure you didn't crack a plug or leave one loose? Sure no wire is loose or burned? Sure the IC Module isn't overheating? Have you checked the wire terminals in the Opti and coil for corrosion, including the Opti harness connectors? Are you sure you don't have an inector problem?

Re: optispark question

High unburned HC's can be too rich a mixture (but CO will also be high), or leaking injectors and misfires (CO may not be high). As noted in my earlier post, misfires will richen the mixture and cause high unburned HC's.
