Optispark Problem
Optispark Problem
Alright well I posted the other day about my vent line and vacuum line not being connected with my new opti spark. Got a response on the possible problems with that. So here is the new ?.
If the opti is faulty now due to moisture, dirty air, etc entering it what are some ways I will notice this? Pardon my ignorance but I have not had a problem with something like this before. It takes a much larger than normal time to tach up when rev'd in neutral or with the clutch engaged. Also throttle response below 2500rpms is not what it used to be either. I already have codes in the computer so until I have that tested again I will not know if it has thrown a code for spark or what not. Since this is my first built engine I am still tryin to learn the nature of the beast, but also don't want to mistake engine normality for engine problems.
I am takin it back to the mechanic again for hmmmm the 6'th time in the past month that I have had her back to fix items that should have been done during install of the new engine. So if there are other things I can examine or test out please let me know. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Optispark Problem
Moisture can cause carbon tracking in the cap, and rust in the back 1/2, which blinds the optical sensor. My original Opti showed signs of a stumble up to 2,500rpm, OK up to 4,500rpm, and an intermittent and random surging from 4,500rpm up to red line. It got a fairly regular DTC 16 for loss of low res pulse. When I opened the Opti, the optical sensor was filled with rust particles.
If you have codes, get it scanned. It will save you a lot of guessing, and you will be much better equipped when you take it to the shop.
