He should not have a problem putting the optispark back on, since it can only (correctly) go back on one way. What year car does he have? You also will not need to know what piston is at TDC, but if he still wants to know, there are TDC indicators for cylinders #1 and #6 stamped on the back of the optispark. The slot for the pin/keyway, depending on year, will point to the corresponding piston.

What year is his car?

Just find the "keyed" slot on the splined drive of the opti and match it up. That's all you have to do. You don't need to know where the cylinder positions are.

Tell him to forget all that and do it like we said. It's not like an old SBC rear mount distributor.

95 opti will have 2 vent holes on the bottom.

One goes to the manifold and one goes to the elbow.

If he did, it won't work. You already saw the pic of the back of a 93-94 above. A 95-97 looks like this. He would not even be able to get the drive portion through the hole in the timing cover.
