Angry opti spark, installed 2 BRAND NEW GM units in 4 days!!! READ!

Well, we have installed two brand new GM opti spark units in the past 4 days on my blown LT1 TA, after the 2nd unit I decided to pull the 1st one apart and find out what all the rattling was about.

Rotor and cap were worn, rotor was blown apart (no contacts left- dangling in bottom of unit) checked timing cover alignment with block-good, dowel pins are in place and square, cover is not cracked around dowel pins, no problems there, this is the same timing cover that we have been running for three years (brand new GM) motor is brand new, custom COMP cam new thrust plate and cloyes true roller chain (E-water pump).

so.............do ya guys think the cam is walking and pushing the rotor into the cap, heating it up, melting, then destroying the rotor?

Bout ready to call bob bailey and have him send us some LS1 coils.....

<K>

did you cut the dowel pin down on the cam? for some reason they are too long and ruin opties... i suspect this is your problem. the opties dont just die but they break like you are describing. why comp keeps putting in dowel pins that are overlength i dont know but i have emailed them about it before only to naturally get no response back.

you check the dowel pin length, and that the right cam bolts were used?

you may try shimming the opti slightly.

Arrow bolts and dowel pin

? has anyone here had this problem?

we know all about the long dowel pins, and ALWAYS have to slide hammer them out and recut them, this one didnt come with a dowel (custom comp piece) so we installed a stocker, (maybe comp didnt drill the blank deep enough? Hrm, sounds like the dowel could be causing the problem?

Every time I instal a new opti, we make sure that the unit seats FLAT on the timing cover, and when it seats, it clicks into place, so no pressure is put on the unit (internally) this one did just that and showed no sign of pressure...

G*D DAYUM PIECES OF S**T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did someone aleready assainate the engineer of this thing?

When I installed my XE 230 durng my cam/head swap, I checked the dowel pin lenght next to the stocker. Wouldnt you know it, it was a good bit longer, and Im sure enough to cause opti problems like you are having right now. What I did was mark the lenght of the stocker on the Comp Cam, cover the new cam in the bag that it was wrapped in from Comp Cams, and cut of the extra lenght of the pin off with my Dremel and cut off whell. The Dremel whizzed through it in about 20 seconds. I would devinitly check out the dowel pin lenght. If you have to cut it on the motor, it should be easy to do once you have the timing cover off.

I switched my vacuum lines on my opti and it melted the rotor. The vacuum must of sucked the cover in till it rubbed on the rotor.
