Unhappy OPTI Spark help

OK my 97 Z28 had a bad OPTI spark seal and was leaking oil.
So I took took the OPTI spark off and replaced the seal behind it that was leaking.
The car was not running right stalling out at an idle sometimes.
Had a miss below 2000 rpm.
So I took the OPTI spark apart.
It had oil in it.
So I had a old OPTI spark that came off the car before that ran fine.
It was apart.
Because once you take the rotor off the two wheels fall off.
I put it together the wheels are keyed and will only go on one way right?
So I put it back on my car.
Now the car wond idle at all when I started it sounds like it's retarted as hell.
Barely will start.
So what's wrong?
I check the firing order thats right.
I know the OPTI spark is in right.
I know it will go in only one way.
I don't see how the dam thing could go bad sitting in my house for a year and a half.
So what's going on here

Thanks,

Chris.

Re: OPTI Spark help

Sounds like you need a whole opti...You might have hit the shutter wheel or opti sensor itself.

Well I pulled it off and you know this OPTI spark that only goes on one way went on "the wrong way".
I don't know why.
But it did.
It went on like butter.
I will post a picture of it tomorrow.
The pin on the cam left a mark on the OPTI spark.

Thanks any way

On the 95 and later models, the slot the dowel pin goes in is clearly marked by the "1" and the slot appears different than the other 2 slots. The seal can put up resistance to inserting it correctly that can be confused with the resistance of pushing on the wrong slot. If there is any question about it's position, put #1 on TDC and remove the cap. The rotor should now be pointing in the direction of the #1 cylinder contact inside the cap.

I'm also wondering if you have the same fuel in the vehicle for the past "year and a half". Not sure if you know this or not but fuel begins to break down within 30 days after it is refined. Stabilizer will prolong its life, but only if it's put in fresh fuel. If the fuel has already gotten to a certain point in breaking down, all the stabilizer in Texas won't stop it from going bad.

The aligment pin on the cam made a mark where it was on wrong.
I guess even the second gen vented OPTI Spark can go on wrong.
Like I said it went on like butter.

Re: OPTI Spark help

I believe you need to replace that opti. Even if you reseat it, it appears to be out of time. I may be wrong but look at the picture of the back of a normal one that Rob has on his web site. And as always, thanks Rob for the use of your web site.

Notice the 1 is at the correct dowel hole location. That is what my old one and my new one looked like.

Have a look at one at a dealer.

Re: OPTI Spark help

hmmm... There is no way that could have been flat on the block. If I read the pic right, your saying the cam pin was in the space for the cam bolt. Is that right? Well, where did the cam bolts sit? If this is correct, you were putting a heck of a lot of pressure on the back of the opti as it was spinning. I would replace it, unless you get a kick out of doing this job over and over again. Just my 0.02

Yea I put a new one in yesterday.
And it run's fine.
But I am waiting for a fan motor before I put coolant back in.
Makes life easy if you take a hose or two off.
And yes I am saying "the cam pin was in the space for the cam bolt".
You can see it in the picture where the cam pin made a mark.
I have put in an OPTI spark before and have rebult a few engines too.
So I know what I'm doing.
But this thing stumps me.
You would think that if it went in the wrong way it would not sit flush with the timing cover.
But it did.
Does not make sense right?

Thanks,

Chris.
