Opti problem and delteq question

I just found out that my opti is starting to go (at 550 miles on it) and less than a year. I'm going to try and get it replaced since it is less than a year old. It is throwing code 36 on the scanner if anyone can tell me what that is. My next question is if the opti is going bad do I need to put a new one on in order to purchase the delteq kit or is that the best time to buy one, I'm tired of messing with this thing and would like to get something reliable. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Opti problem and delteq question

I also had my opti go out with under 1000 miles on a brand new Gm unit. I believe code 36 has to do with either the hi or low res pickup of the opti. The Delteq system will only work if the back half (the optical pick up) of the opti is working. The system still relys on this for the correct ignition timing for the car to run. If your optical pick up is failing, which it sounds like it is, then the Delteq will not fix your problem. It simply removes the spark from the cap/rotor of the opti which is more prone to failure than the optical pickup portion of the opti.

Well it was worth hoping, guess I'll try to get it replaced from the dealership, of course we all know what a headache that is, granted it was jason cromer so hopefully he'll help me out. Thanks.

Re: Opti problem and delteq question

If you have to replace the opti again, I would look into possibly buying a Dynaspark. It costs about the same as the Delteq system but is pretty much a heavy-duty opti which corrects the problems inherent within Gm's original design. It may be the last opti you would ever have to buy. So you have a few options.

1. Buy and replace existing opti with new gm unit and pray it doesnt go out again.(250-300 +labor if u cant do it yourself)
2. Replace opti with Gm unit and add Delteq (250 for opti + 700 for delteq)
3. Purchase Dynaspark and replace faulty opti with Dynaspark. I think they are around 500-700 bucks, not sure though.

Goodluck and dont give up. Myself and a good deal of the members on the board sympathize with you and feel your pain...most of us have been there before.

Re: Opti problem and delteq question

Are you still using the non-vented style opti?

Re: Opti problem and delteq question

Yea what the hell is with this? Mines acting up and I've maybe put 2000 miles on it this summer? So stupid. Honestly what possibly makes this thing act up that fast?
And what about the Dynaspark is better? Seems pretty expensive, unless it doesn't fail, then its gold.
