opti plugs wires help fast

just bought 93 z28 drivin 96,000 miles & kept factory. replaced opti with brand new one from advanced, msd cap that has the vacuum set up on it.. ngk plugs and factory wires. ran fine before that. at first would not start after charging battery now will run but spits and sputters, lots of pinging and seems to run rich. also removed a/c componets & new fuel filter. could plug wires do all this or is brand new opti bad?

The 93-94 Opti connects to the cam sprocket with a splined drive shaft. Its possible to insert the shaft in the sprocket with the splines indexed incorrectly. There is a missing tooth and a bump that's supposed to prevent that, but its way to easy to assemble it incorrectly.

Your dad's 95 does not have the same drive mechanism as your 93.

If piston number 1 is top dead center where is the notch/keyway located on the cam.

Shoebox's site has a great photo of the opti alignment:

Thumbs up Re: opti plugs wires help fast

well after taking the front of the motor apart several times trying to fix the problem i ended up taking out the radatior completly so i could see the cam splines and line the opti up with it. it still did no run right but somthing i did not know was the spline shaft comes out of the opti and has the same line grove to be lined up in that also. my dad however new this but just some miss comunication over the phone. so some how it got lined up wrong in that. as soon as i lined up that and lined up the cam spline it ran fine. and i made it to the track only two hours late. thanks to everyone....
