Opti options
Changing the opti was something I really only wanted to do once and so I went with GM and now that is shot to Sh!*. I don't know that I would trust the reliability of a piece that I hadn't heard of before.
Since we don't know the year of your engine, it is a vented or unvented Opti? If its vented, is it possible your cam dowel pin is too long, and pushed the rotor forward into the cap? If this is a replacement, what failed on your first Opti?
Its a 94.5 Caddy motor that has had advanced induction aluminum heads put on it. Now about that cam. The first build of this 383 I used a 234/242 110LSA marine grind comp cams cam that trashed the oil pump drive gear and forced the cam about .030" forward into the OPTI (ground a ridge in the front of the cam against the retaining plate). So now I am $1500 in repair of this engine and I just went back with a LT4 Hot cam for better driveability than that big 234 110lsa cam gave me. Doesn't sound near as cool but drivability was vastly better. But when I pulled the opti apart the 2 screws were not in the rotor button and just fell out on the table when I pulled it apart and there was no evidence of any loctite on bolts. While I could see the cam damaging the OPTI. I don't see how it could make those bolts fall out on their own. I replaced the OPTI when I put this LT1 combo down in my 1991 Camaro RS Convertible. Just want a nice reliable cruiser that is wicked fast when I need it to be and I have been nearly 4 yrs on this project (not a lot of time to work on my own crap) and I only got 1000 miles on the first version of this motor before my oil looked like silver paint and there was plenty of silver looking sludge in the lifter valley when I pulled the motor apart. So far I have put 150 miles on version 2 of this 383 and now the opti problem.
No it was a typo. I bought the one in my car that has crapped out from Allignition. I got thepartsladi opti ready to go in. I just didn't want to install it without getting the screws tight
For you guys that want to see something NASTY. Look at this rotor button that I pulled out of my AC Delco OPTI.

Its a wonder the car ran at all before the rotor button just fell off completely.
I put the car back together today with the Accel cap and rotor kit that I bought off ebay for $70 shipped and car fired right up and I burped the cooling system a couple times and then after the 2nd cool down I fired up the 3rd time just to make sure all was well and about 5 minutes into that run the car just started pouring smoke out of the exhaust like when you tip your push mower over and then fire it back up. So it looks like I fix one problem just to have another possibly more serious problem crop up. No abnormal noises and the motor actually sounded really good but the more it smoked the more it seemed to develop a miss so tomorrows project is to pull some spark plugs and find the cylinder that is the culprit.
