opti, opti, opti oh what luck i have....

ok, im sure with all my posts about having that high rpm miss that keeps becoming more and more prevalent in the lower rpms....i pulled my opti today...got it off in less than 2 hrs! well anyway there is a whole lot of play in the bearings....like i can feel it with my hands...im guessing somewhere around 1/8th of an inch of play..however the inside of the opti was as clean as a whistle...so im guessind that this play in the bearings is what is causing my miss???? this is from a previous post....just discovered another thing that could be leading to the problem....ok the play in the bearing is side to side play. and you know that metal plate that goes under the plastic plate in the vented opti? well mine didnt have that? could that also cause a misfire?

If the internals of the Opti can move 1/8" side-to-side because of the loose bearing, its going to affect performance. The rotor is going to be bouncing off some contact buttons and too far away from others. And the optical wheel is going to put out an erratic pulse pattern.

Are you saying the metal shield in the upper left side of this photo (courtesy of M. Chaney) is missing? Might serve as a shield to block the RFI from the cap/rotor from interfering with the optical sensor, but that's just a guess.

I spent roughly 5 hours doing my opti replacement. I hope to never need to do it again. I wouldn't put back a part that was in question unless it was simple to redo later. I did the water pump since it believed it would go sooner than later and i value my time more than money. Even as i love working on my car doing things 2 or 3 times sucks. The price of a Summit or MSD unit are pretty reasonable.

If it serves the purpose I ASSume it serves, wouldn't it make sense to put it back?

Try "parts wanted". There should be lots of them floating around, given the number of Optis that are replaced every week. Make sure its from the same model (vented/unvented) since the cover fits over the harness wire tower and that dimension may be different. They also moved the internals around a little when they did the conversion to vented. The one in the Mike Chaney's photo is a vented Opti.
