Opti is gone, replace or upgrade to vented?

Is it really worth it to upgrade to a vented opti? The stocker lasted me 120k miles. If it is worth it to do the swap, what is all involved that I need to replace? Thanks.

Just replace it with the non-vented. Othewise you'll need a new cam and timing cover. It'll last you another 120K, at that point you'll probably dump the car, or do a major rebuild.

The vented design is better, but not much.

Thanks, that makes me feel at least a little bit better. I have a cam install in the near future. Will the non-vented opti handle the cam with no problem? Thanks again.

Sure. Just make sure the cam is designed for the early LT1 (92-94).

FYI, the early optis didn't have the greatest gasket design, it was succeptable to water seeping in. When I replaced mine in my 94, I ran a bead of RTV around the outside of the opti, where the cap meets up with the base, and around the connector. Any water that splashes onto the cap now drains right off, and doesn't get into the cap. An ounce of prevention.

eckler's corvettes make a retro kit...

to install a 1/8 tube in the early opti's and make it like a late model.
