Opti experts have a look

My car has recently developed a miss. The water pump is not leaking. All plugs and wires have about 4k miles and have been double checked. I've swapped coils and ICMs and couldn't eliminate the problem. Fuel pressure is fine. Opti is an AC Delco from Summit ($500+) and only has about 4k miles on it as well. I removed the cap to discover the pictures below. Does it look like the cap and rotor are what could be causing the problems? Notice the burned area in the plastic and the slight corroson on the terminals and rotor? Does that look like normal wear & tear for only 4k miles? With the cap on or off, and spinning the opti drive gear manually, I can sometimes hear/feel a slight drag during the revolutions. I'm not getting any troube codes. I'm tired of eating optis. Can I simply remove the rotor if I decided to do the LTCC conversion?

It's easier to just leave the rotor in place if you swap to the LTCC.

Im far from any opti expert but you can take rotor out for lttc( I would leave it in an use loctite on the screws of rotor) I read someone saying it helps the optical part wich you will need from warping(have no idea of any validity there). That does bring me to a question of you saying you hear and feel a drag. I know warpage effects the reading so id look into that further and ask guys who do know opti's. Will your opti push in and sit flat against its mounting surface without using the bolts? I ask that cuz if your dowel pin is too long itcan warp things or show you missed the dowel pin.

I have the spline driven opti, not the one driven by the cam dowell. I always line them up and install flush against the timing cover...so i am not sure of the warpage. Are there bearings inside the opti that can cause the slight drag as they wear? Do the cap and rotor look too beat up?

The contacts are pretty well trashed as well as the housing. The burned plastic is where your ignition voltage is making its way out of the opti instead of going to the plugs. You may want to pull the optical side apart and see if the stutter wheel is burnt as well.

Summit said they will replace the complete unit since it still falls under the ac delco warranty. Maybe i will upgrade the cap and rotor once the new one comes in...

The cap & rotor were never really the problem with the opti. It's the place they chose to mount it that's the problem.
