opti conversion question

Im going to convert to a 95+ opti. If I do this, will I need a new cam as well?
Also, the guy selling the kit, said the Lt4 HD DR timing chain was crap. He said he could show me numerous sprockets that were stripped. Has anyone had a bad experience with this chain?

Opti swap details, with part #s:

http://para.noid.org/~muttvette/opti.html

The reports of failed LT4 Extreme Duty timing sets that I have seen seem to point to incorrect install procedures. I've been running the ED set for 6 years in an 800HP nitrous motor with a solid roller cam and beefy valve springs, and no problems. A buddy of mine made over 1,100HP in a 383 with 20+# of boost and a solid roller, and no problems with the ED set.

Re: opti conversion question

Why do you feel you need an Extreme Duty timing set? The stocker isn't all that bad for a bolt-on setup, and there is also an LT4 (standard duty) timing set, with a heavier cam sprocket to compensate for some harmonics in the LT4 cam/valve train. I machined away some of the bulk in the LT4 ED cam sprocket, since it is way heavier than it needs to be.

Re: opti conversion question

I too have run the LT4 Ed timing set with no problems to 6800

I wouldnt recommend with the hotcam kit. Do a little research and you will find out you can get more power with less or about the same money. Just my .02

Re: opti conversion question

hey go to Summit Racing, and look at the MSD and Accell OPTI replacement, they have vented 94 OPTI's that are cheaper and better than doing an E-Bay conversion!

Re: opti conversion question

Do you mean this kit comes w/ just the opti, and it fits the 94 dowel, but is vented? The kit on ebay comes with a new 95 gm opti, timing cover, timing chain, sprockets, gaskets, and is 0nly $550. I cant find what you are talking about on summit, but assume it is over $500.

If you are going to do a cam anyway, it is a good time to convert to the vented opti. Converting also give you more timing set options.

The flip side is the MSD opti that fits your current splined drive has a complete vent system (which the normal splined opti does not have) and you don't have to change anything else. You can use any cam you want, but still have to use the stock type cam gear with the splines in it.

Re: opti conversion question

Ok, I get it. Since im putting in the lt4 kit, do you think I should just get the 95 conversion kit anyway? Comes with timing chain, cover gaskets, vented opti. Its just a couple less things I will have to worry about in the future.

Re: opti conversion question

I would have to see this "kit" to comment about it.
