not unless you turn the timing screw on the msd opti (which is too hard to accidentally do). the splines on the back of the opti and the cam gear only fit one way

Yes you can get it out of time when installing the Opti.

It is actually a common problem for people to align the "odd" tooth on the splined driveshaft incorrectly with the teeth on the cam sprocket hole. I'd estimate at least 10% of the unvented Opti installs make this error. Theory - can't happen. Real world - happens all the time.

A one-tooth error throws the timing off by 20 cam degrees = 40 crank degrees.

Shoebox has the answer to that:

No one said you ABSOLUTELY had an Opti timing problem. You asked if it was possible, and someone told you it wasn't possible. I was simply trying to point out that it is not only possible, but happens quite often.

I took it off working fine, but then put it back on wrong and car would not start. Then i let it sit for 1 week cause i though i needed to get a new opti. Found out i might have it on wrong and took it back off to try another way and yes i did have it on wrong. Now the car will start but it dose not run right it seems like it wants to backfire all the time and miss allot.SOMETIMES IT TAKES A MIN TO START. Maybe wires are not on the opti right or all the way what do you guys think. Thanks for any help.
Oh and injuneer the spring that goes aroung the circle thing the spline goes in to on the opti what is that for? It shows it in the pic you posted.

It's part of the shaft seal that is in the back of the opti.

Check your plug wire routing.

ok man if that spring is not there will it hurt, and you have a page that tells the order of the wires in to the opti and the cylinders right.

Not every seal may be of the same design. Hard to say about the spring. If it was designed for a spring, it should be there.
