Opinions on a hi-flow cat vs stock cat?

Anyone have an opinion on these items? I'm considering replacing my stock cat with a 3" high flo Catco converter but i'd like to make sure that this isn't going to be a waste of money. Could I take the money and spend it elsewhere and see better gains? LCA's or crank pulley for example? Thanks

sheesh no one has answered you yet...lol...yes sir they make a significant difference. It's regulated material so the composite is not changed just the inlet/outlet makes it a hi-flo...some hi-flows claim to be better than others but who knows? But definitely they make a difference...call MTI for some dyno results, they could probably tell you some specifics.

2CNTRY,

Catco cats may be $50 from Summit, but the $50 one is a universal cat. The direct fit cats for F-bodies are much more expensive. I've heard that the universal cats are a PITA and it is worth the extra $$$ to get the direct fit.

From what I've heard some of the best cats come from Random Technology. They have some dyno graphs on their web-site, although it is for a LS1, you get the idea:

I say NO cat
And yes, i have emmisions too, but i put the cat on when i take the test..
Thats just another option..

But ya, summitt has the catco for around 50.00...The random tech is OVER PRICED...

The direct fit catco is $116 at Summit. I want to stay emissions legal. I'm wondering how much the increase from the stock diameter to the 3" all the way back will help? I would never spend $200+ on anything smog related. That's pretty foolish, i'd go off road pipe and switch to stock cat for tests first.

Yea, thats what i did. Its not as bad as it seems. The cat is soo restrictive and the ORP just made everything that much better. I love the sound as well. Buts thats just me..

good luck

I just got rid of mine, I know alot of people can't do this because of emmissions but luckily I don't have them here.

Anyway the car seemed to pull a little harder without the cat. And the exhaust sounds better. In the place of the cat I have a cutout for when I want to get loud....

Think about it for a second---you replace the y-pipe-cat-and exhaust to be 3 inch all the way back from 2 14 to 2 1/2 to 3 inch to 3 inch all the way yes you will see a gain but it won't be tire smokin gains; the gains will be better response higher up and very little below I had to do it because of my cam and if you plan future mods (which everyone knows you will) you saved the hassle of adding it later I have the universal cat and it had to be welded to the y-pipe but not to the catback it was worth it IMO

Well, I need to install my Hooker shorties soon so I'm thinking about buying one just because it will be easier to install the flange, which has to be welded on, on a newer cat rather than trying to save my old beat up cat. I'm looking at it as a maintenance repair more than anything. It just so happens that it would be 3" too.

A hi-flow cat is worthless, get a off road pipe and save the stock cat for emission testing and then replace afterwards.I have also seen test and the stock converter outflowed several aftermarket cats on a flow bench and the stock cat already has a 3" in and 3" outlet on it so unless you are also replacing the stock y-pipe there is no need to spend money on a hi-flow cat.
