Opinions on comp cams 986 springs please!!

Hey everyone,

Questions about comp cams 986 springs.

I'm just wondering what is the max lift on these springs.

Will they work with the LT1 heads without modification?

I'm planning on doing a 1.6 RR upgrade now and then a cam (possible cc305) in the future. Will they work for this?

Anyone run this cam and have opinions about it?

Thanks alot.

They will work for the rocker upgrade but don't work well on cams, even though they are recomended on the Comp shelf stuff. A set of beehives will work well now and later.

I have run the 986s with my CC306/1.6rr combo for years and they work great.

Fireman, no offense, I just find it hard to believe those springs are enough for that cam. There is more to a cam than I claim to know about, but the basic specs of mine are a much smaller than yours and I found the 987's not tobe enough spring. Granted my lobes might be more aggressive, but still, I don't know why yours work for you. Anyways the 918's solved my problem.

Comp recommended the 986s and I got 'em. I run Crane gold 1.6rrs and the CC306. Also run Type R lifters, 12:1 compression and LT4 valves in unported castings. I make peak HP at 6200rpm. I can email you a dyno graph if you would like.

Please do, if you don't mind. Maybe the light weight valves have something to do with it? Thanks, Rick.

Yeah that's the only way they work is with the lightweight LT4 valves.

They are actually Manley Raceflo valves, just in LT4 sizes. Don't know what they weigh in comparison to the actual LT4s.
