Open headers/Back pressure/valves

How long would it be safe to run a car with open headers? Would this have any effect on the exhaust valves in the long run, due to little backpressure? Right now I'm just running LT's and a y-pipe. I love the sound though, nasty as hell!

My dean back in HS didnt like it much-
she said it was a safety hazard and i couldn't drive the car to school any more.

I'll never forget the day I left denention (that I got for that) with a car mag in my hand

"what are you doing, making your car, your car - speedier!?"

Plenty of people have ran open headers for months at a time, without any problems, even breaking down the heads and checking the valves and valve guides to disprove the myth.

I ran my car open LTs for over a month, I figured it was time for exhaust when I had to keep asking people, "What did you say?".
