One last dowel pin grinding question...

Now I know that the length must be .620. Ive read some posts and some say that their stock one was .650. Now if I take off some and the dowel ends up being .620 say or even .590 is that going to be a proglem? Im not going to hack away but I dont have access to extremely accurate measuring tools here. As long as it sits within the correct slot without pushing on the opti it will be ok right?

Just trying to cover my rear so Im not doing this again...

I just went through the same thing with the XE230 that I am installing right now. I put the stock cam next to the XE230, and the dowel pin on the XE 230 was a little longer. I dont know by how much, because I dont have any tools to exactly measure the lenght. I got the Dremel out with a cut off wheel, and took off enough to make the XE230 the same lenght as the stocker. Like you said, as long as it sits within the correct slot without pushing on the opti you will be fine. If you can get your hands on a stock cam to compare it to, that will be your best bet.

WHile this is correct, the problem is determining if indeed the dowel is touching the opti and pushing forward. If it is the bearing's life is shortened. Dynatech the makers of the aftermarket (similar parts) opti the Dynaspark, states that they recommend that the dowel be no longer than .605. That's what I used versus the .620. So there seems to be some tolerance, but I don't want to have one excessively long.
