one cylinder misfiring randomly
one cylinder misfiring randomly
i have a cylinder misfiring on the passenger side bank of the engine. i thought it was an exhaust leak so i took off the y pipe from my lts to inspect. i found no exhaust leak.
so i ran the car open headers to hear what that ticking sound was. so while running i heard a horrible ticking from the passenger side header, the drivers side ran fine. i put my hand over the passenger side collector and felt an uneven exhaust flow compared to the drivers side. it was horribly off. you could hear a random and sometimes a constant tick. its greatly affecting power also of course.
i checked all of the plugs and wires, all looked good. i found that my coil was arcing to the block. replaced and relocated away from the engine block. checked all of the injectors and put a volt meter on them and all read good. i think it read 11~ ohms. i am going to pull the fuel rail tonight to see if any are clogged. fuel pressure good also.
while driving theres a noticeable power loss in all rpm ranges. also while cruising when i let off the throttle theres sometimes a huge to baby backfire. its embarrassing......... my car has good oil pressure and runs 171 degrees at all times.
im thinking opti. but does a bad opti cause one cylinder to not fire in random occasions?
could it be something internal? lifter possibly? i popped my valve cover on the passenger side and heard no noise using the ear to the screwdriver technique. its not a rocker arm tapping for sure.
im thinking its something simple hopefully but the car has 142k on it. it could need a engine rebuild maybe.
any ideas???

Very well could be the cap and rotor of the opti. I suggest you remove the cap first and view the contents. Because you are backfiring, it sounds obvious that you are building up fuel and suddenly firing. You should eliminate the wires and plugs first. Then most likely it is the cap and rotor.
Remember, the opti is a distributor. And as such the cap and rotor should be replaced on a periodic basis.
