Ok one more time, cutting access hatch in vert for fuel pump swap

Ok one more time..Anyone cut an access hatch in their lt1 vert for a fuel pump swap.It looks easy enough in the hatchbacks but heard it wasn't possible in the verts.
How many hours labor to install a pump in the vert if do it the normal way ,drop the tank, etc?
I doubt would do it myself.

Whew, $1000. That is a lot of money for a fuel pump. Why is it any different for a vert? It really isn't that bad doing it yourself. Just dropping the tank sucks. Just remember the filler necks have ribs for a reason (to be bent) or else you may never get the tank out. If you were located in Mo, I know some guys that would do it for pretty cheap.

my $.98, if you cant do a fuel pump without cutting the car, you shouldnt be working on cars. it can be done in 5-6 hours w/o pulling the rear end.

I have done it both ways. You dont have to pull the rear end but you have to drop it and take off all of the panhard rods etc and you basically have to bend the gas tank out and you have to bend it back in when your done, it's a major PITA!!! If you are an average guy do not attempt that route.

I cut the hatch option and had it installed and done in approx 30 min

That replacement looks great for hatch guys but does it work in a vert?

Re: Ok one more time, cutting access hatch in vert for fuel pump swap

I have a 94 vert and had to replace the fuel pump last november... I read about cutting the access hole, but didn't want to cut through the additional structural steel they add for the convertible. My apartment complex wouldn't let me pull the gas tank in the parking lot, so I had to pay to have the job done. I think I paid around $800 including pump, relay, and filter. If you have the facility to drop the tank, I still think doing it yourself is the way to go...
Good luck,
Steve

As long as you can get access to that little area to cut yes it will work

if its a race type car then an access panel should be done but if it is a normal everyday driver it should be done as GM intended us to do!

you have to unhook the catback, the panhard and the shocks. then you pull the springs out. jesus christ, how ****ing lazy are you?!? it takes like 30 minutes to do the above mentioned tasks. is your D1 mounted to your 396 w/ zip ties and duct tape?

And when you are finished you can put the car back together without rivets and RTV.

I think he was talking about bending the gas tank to get it out and bend it back in. Now that is a PITA.

Perhaps it would be better if any of the vert guys out ther post if they did attempt to do the hatch method and post pics if they took any I was just in a similar dilemma (ended up getting bent over at the dealership to pass emissions here due to a vapor leak i couldnt trace).

If anyone with a vert could posts pics of how the hatch job went it would be REALLY beneficial.
