Ok to install new Cam and not new Lifters?

I have a LT1 and would like to gain some HP.
I don't have to deal with the state and tailpipe checks.
I have been doing a lot of reading here and found lots of Cam advise. But I was told you had to install new lifter?
Is this true? and any advise on what cam to get sure would be nice.
I have a 95 LT1 that Im installing into a 78 Datsun 280Z.
The motor is on a stand and I want to get my upgrades done this winter. Im not much in the mood to pay $500 for polishing the ports....
Thanks
Terry

Depends on the mileage and condition of the lifters. There was a very recent thread about this. A search should find it.

Holy crap, in a 280Z, that's cool. Sounds like you're going to have to do some suspension work for that motor in that kind of car.

I swapped cams at 125k miles and kept the stock lifters in it. So far no problems, but if you have the money to do it, can't hurt anything.

My motor came out of a wrecked Z28. I got the whole car after the yard stripped it. It had 55,000 on the motor and a T56 transmission.
I will only gain about 50 LBs from the original motor. i need a shoe horn to get it in, but others have done it.

Can you tell how worn out a lifter is buy looking at it?
I have check on the hot cam kits, I found one for $525 but it dont come with roller tappets. What are they? and how much are they?
I know roller rockers are better and they come with the kit.
I pretty green on this. I did a cam job on a old 350 that had a lobe gone, motor tossed a rod 8 weeks later. I also added a 4 barrel carb, bottom end must not have been to tight.

Roller tappets=roller lifters. If the motor only has 55k miles I say reuse them.

I deal mostly in building high perf. engines but i and my friends would never run old lifters with new cam. with the new cam you have to warm it up at about 2000 rpm to wear the new lifters and cam together. I WOULD NOT RUN OLD LIFTERS!!!!! Ill check into it further.
Never mind that i wasn't paying attention that they're roller lifters not tappets so it should be fine to run them.
