Ok, I'm confused now (torque converter)

Hey guys, I am planning on getting a torque converter later, after hotcam, hooker lt's, 3.73's and some other goodies. This is going to be a daily driver. After reading some of the posts lately I have been confused on what a torque converter actually is, what is does, and how it works. COuld someone explain these to me. Sorry about this, thanks and God Bless.

well it sorta acts like a clutch in a manual to best explain it. until a certain rpm it doesnt put full torque of the engine to the tranny so say if your stall is 3000 it will not put the full engine torque to the wheels untill 300rpms not saying it wont move just will not lockin

I wrote a brief intro to converters that you can view at www.kennedysdynotune.com. Click on "Tech Tips" at the bottom of the left hand menu bar and then click on "Torque Converters" in the list of links in the main window. It will answer some basic questions about converters.
