ok... car making loud noise
**HUGE UPDATE** ok... car making loud noise
***OK BIG UPDATE***
I pulled my drivers side valve cover and i saw THIS!!!!
click me
i also saw a large rubber thing i dont know what it is, but its like a circle.. like 2x bigger than a 20 oz cap... and its black... just sitting there ... hmm?
soo spun bearing?
this is making me soooooo sad!!!
i was driving my car and i was at a stop light.. all the sudden it turned green, i go, and i hear this insane noise.. kinda sounded like when your headers are not on properly and there is an exhaust leak... but its super loud.. and i checked the bolts, which are good. now i let the car sit a few WEEKS, and i go to start it up, it has a hard time, then it does, and the noise starts.... then it just violently SHUTS COMPLETELY OFF. im scared... please dont say pushrod or bearing... im going to check the oil tomorrow for metal/coolant....
*praying*

Re: ok... car making loud noise
before this, the tranny would sometimes feel like it was slipping. so this could be it eh? im going to check my oil now, along with the exhaust. How would I know if its my TC?
Re: ok... car making loud noise
That's a valve stem lock so I'm gonna say dropped valve. You need to pull your rockers and find out which valve is missing the lock. Are all of the valve springs intact and still attached to all valve stems? Unless you're very lucky there is some major engine damage happening if you continue to drive it.
Re: ok... car making loud noise
yea.. i agree with the above guy.. that is for the valves and can cause serious damage to an engine when that happens. That crazy noise you heard was probably a valve sliding into your bore and being chewed up by your piston.. not a good thing.
As for th TC.. you can't really tell i guess until it is to late. when they start slipping a little bit it is a good time to start looking for a god rebuild shop, a new tranny, or the tools to rebuild it yourself because it will die.. only a matter of time. Pulled mine off today and what a mess it was.. one of the ears on the TC was even broken off... probably what finally destroyed the pump and the forward clutchpacks.

Re: ok... car making loud noise
i havent driven it. i turned it off right when i heard this. then i turned it back on so i could let a friend hear it for about 4 seconds. how much is this going to cost me, you think/

It will cost at least a rebuild and a new head and possibably a block.
If it broke the piston it will put the pieces in the intake and spread the pieces to ALL other cyls. DO NOT run it any more until ya tear it down. If it only damaged that one cyl ya are mighty lucky.
Re: ok... car making loud noise
Then Again He Might Be Lucky And The Other Lock Is Still Holding The Valve In Place, But From What He Is Describing, The Rubber Piece Sounds To Me Like The Valve Guide Stem Seal.
Pull The Rockers Off And See What Else You Got Going On In There, And Dont Start It Up At All Till U Figure It All Out. The More It Runs The More Damage Thats Being Caused..

The only piece up there that is about that size is the retainer or the spring cup or spring shims. He mentioned it was double the size of a 20ounce bottle cap and the seal is smaller than that and the retainer is not rubber.

HOPE he got lucky and the valve didn't fall but the engine shutting off suddenly sure sounds like it is in there with a piston

Re: ok... car making loud noise
so i pulled off the rocker.... i noticed it was crooked on the spring, then came to realize nothing was holding it on the spring the rocker is chewed up a bit at the front, and my pushrod is a little bit bent and has a crack where the bend is. How would i go about seeing if I dropped a valve? pull the heads?
.. that doesn't sound too exciting...how can it be done? TY!!

this is a pic (sorry for crap quality) of the RR removed. i dont know how to tell if a valve dropped, but i can move that little rod up and down that the spring was attatched to...im guessing i have to pull the head off
!
!
!
and u can see some of the metal shavings of the damn RR being killed by the spring, lol... ;(

Re: ok... car making loud noise
That Little Sivler Post That U Say That U Can Move Up And Down By Hand, Thats The Valve. It Should Have Been Right At The Front Under The Rocker Arm, Dont Let It Fall Into The Head, You Might Have Gotten Lucky At This Point.
Theres A Tool To Put The Spring And Retainers Back On But You Will Have To Pull The Plenimun To Get At The Lifter. The Lifter Probably Isn`t Seated On The Cam Anymore.
Let Us Know How It Goes From Here.
1racerdude,,,, I Was Refering To The Rubber Valve Stem Seal That Sits Around The Valve Stem. I Have Seen Some Valves That Have The Spring Loaded Stem Seal And Also Another Large Rubber Boot In The Middle Of The Spring. Im Assuming That This Was Done To Help With The Oil From Getting On The Valve Stem Seal Itself. Sorry If I Was Wrong But Do You Know What Im Talking About??

First thing I would check.
